Evolution of life

Our Earth was originated by a giant explosion took place n the universe before 3.5 billion years ago. Gradually the life was originated. The first atmosphere contained Carbon dioxide, Methane, Hydrogen dioxide etc. These atmospheric gasses reacted each other by the energy of lightning, volcanic eruptions and ultra violet rays of the sun and made ingredients suitable for the origination of organisms. Then those ingredients were mixed with rain water ad collected n seas which is know as primordial soup.

Then the first living being called a precell was originated in it after 1 billion years. It was the anaerobic, heterotopic, unicellular bacteria. Then the bacterium developed into a algae. By that algae the atmosphere gained oxygen. Algae were developed as plants and bacteria were developed as animals. With the time human was developed before 2.5 billion years ago.

Japanese Brave Girl

My favourite TV program is Oshin. It is telecasted on Rupavahini on Fridays at 4.30 p.m. It is a Japanese teledrama. It is very realistically produced and dubbed in Sinhala. I like it because it tells us the difficulties, troubles and the problems faced by a young Japanese woman.

Oshin faced all these problems in a brave manner. I admire the courageous manner in which she worked to solve the various problems she had. After much hard work she ultimately achieves her goals.

I never missed a single episode and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing that teledrama. Oshin is a good example of a courageous and hardworking girl.

Tourist Amazement

Tourism is a money spinning industry in any country. The natural scenic beauty of our island attracts tourists who come to our island. They are keen to see and visit places like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. The ruins in these places speak of our culture and also about the gigantic tasks performed by our brave ancient kings.

Tourism is a good foreign exchange earner. When the tourists visit our country they mostly purchase items of antique value. Apart from this they go in search of precious gems, to cities of gems like Ratnapura, Kandy and Matale.

For the tourism to exist our local guides should be trust worthy and should show hospitality This will encourage the in flow of tourists to our motherland. The tourist should have a good picture of our country in his or her mind, which would pave the way for them to visit our country frequently.

The tourist is a link where the trade is concerned, as he could create good impression in the minds of the people in the countries where he tours.

Marvel of Sri Lanka

Although Sri Lanka is a small country in extent, it inherits a long history more that 2500 years. Anuradhapura is the first capital of Sri Lanka where a lot of ancient ruins can be seen. Ruins of very ancient buildings, places, pagodas and tanks bear evidence to a prosperous era of our country. When we visit the ancient city of Anuradhapura we can really be proud of our forefathers and their skills and craftsmanship.

Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambadeniya, Dambulla are some of the other historical places in the country. Aukana and Vijithapura are two other important places in the history of Sri Lanka. Vijithapura is believed to be the place where the king Dutugemunu fought with King Elara. The Buddha statue at Aukana marvels people at its unique quality.

However, there are many historical places in our country. As real citizens we all must be proud of our history and our great ancestors. Further, we all must try to protect these historical monuments for our younger generation.

Lion's Pride in Iconography

The National Flag of any country symbolizes the identity of that nation. Therefore, people of that nation always pay their respect to their National Flag.

The Lion Flag is our country's National Flag. There are four colors on it. They are red, green yellow and orange. The crimson color represents the majority Sinhalese and the orange color the Tamil Community. The green color on the flag represents the Muslim Community.

There is also a lion holding a sword in its right paw which represents bravery and strength. The sword symbolizes justice. There are also four Bo leaves which show the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism.

The National Flag is hoisted on all special occasions of the nation such as the Independence day. It is our duty to stand to attention and pay homage to the National Flag when it is hoisted.

A salutation to the National Flag is a salutation to the entire nation.

Wonder in Astrology

This is a custom among Sinhala and Hindu people from generation to generation. This custom prevails since the era of our forefathers. This is not a teaching of the respective religions. To believe astrology is not a mal-practice but it gives and unprofitable sentiment.

If we practice to do everything at the auspicious times according to the horoscope nothing could be achieved. Horoscope pushes back the progress of our lives and it will be an obstacle in the path of development. The astrologers can never please the intelligent and the educated class. No one is born and no one will die according to the horoscope. Animals, birds, and reptiles know nothing of horoscope. But we human beings with great human minds seek the blessing of the astrologers and horoscopes.

Finally one could imagine that astrology and horoscopes are not essential for our decaying lives. But there may be co-incidents to make it believe.

Devine Power of Life

Friendship is the most beautiful flower which blooms in the garden of life. As we are human we can't live alone. We need friends to stand around us to share our happy and sad feelings. Real friends are very honest to each other. They are very true and trustworthy. Being able to make friends is a divine power.

If you work honest, polite and true you will have lots of friends. Keeping a friendship with someone is not easy. There should be mutual understanding of each other. There should be good attitudes and feelings of each other. We may have lots of friends. But we should have to identify the real friends from them. Friends follow you like your own shadow. When you are in difficulties, they never leave you. They stand by you at all times. They help you and understand you. Therefore it is important to have at least a single good friend.

Gorgeous Palace

White house is the official residence of the President of U.S.A. It is situated in Washington D.C. When this building was constructed, it was not white nor was it called White House.

It was designed by an Irish-born architect James Hoban. Its foundation stone was laid on October 13, 1792 and the construction was completed in 1800. The house was originally built of the grey stone. Since then it has been the official residence of the president of the U.S.A. During the war, it was burnt down by British troops on August 24, 1814. Only a small part of it was left standing. Under Hoban's directions the building was reconstructed and was completed in 1817. In order to cover up the fire and smoke stains, the walls of the building were painted white. So the building came to be called White House. But this did not become its official name until 1902 when President Theodore Roosevelt adopted it.

White House has three stories and 100 rooms. Different rooms have different colors. For example, oval shaped blue room is the reception room for the guests of President and his wife. The red room is furnished with objects of the empire age. There is a rose guest room upstairs where the President and his family live.

Most Precious Stones

Sri Lanka is famous for its precious stones. In the past traders from overseas visited Sri Lanka looking for valuable stones. The areas like Ratnapura, Elahera, Monaragala and Okkampitiya are famous for gems. Originally the gems appear as rough stones. They have to be cut and polished. There are various kinds of gems. The value of a gem depends on it's color, weight and the family it belongs. An experienced person can value a gem without any difficulty. There are also fake stones in the market. One has to be very careful about it. The Gem Corporation is very helpful in this matter.

The gems that are very common in Sri Lanka are blue sapphires, garnets, topaz, cats eyes and moonstones. Diamonds and Emeralds are not found in Sri Lanka.

Worthy Donation

Most of the school children are poor and their parents do not have enough money to buy books and clothes for their children. As a result most of them cannot get engaged in their studies well.

So when the government decided to give free textbooks and clothes to all students. It was a blessing in disguise to them. In the past only the children of the affluent parents were able to learn well. But with the free distribution of books now all can learn well. Now all have equal opportunities. Now the needy children can also dress neatly to school because of the free distribution of clothes.

When school books and clothes were distributed there were simple ceremonies to mark the occasions in every school. After the free distribution of school text books and clothes at school the attendance of the students has increased. The students work hard than before and the general application to works is much better.

Father of Mona Lisa

Leonardo Da Vinci was a great man who knew so much about the world around him. He was an artist, an astronomer, a botanist and an expert on the anatomy of the human body.

He was called Da Vinci, because he was born in the Italian town of Vinci in 1542. In his early years worked in a studio of a well known painter, and when he was 20 years. He him self was a well known person. Leonardo Da Vinci was a great inventor. He drew sketches of machines, long before they were invented. Aeroplan was one of them.

During his time dissecting of dead bodies was prohibited by law. But he did this all the same as he wanted to know much about the structure of the human body. He made sketches of the bones, muscles and many internal organs. Leonardo was also a pioneer in Geology. Some of Leonardo's paintings are among the world's greatest works of art. Two of these are the Mona Lisa and Virgin of the Rock.

The Heart of Kandy

The Temple of the Tooth, which is situated in Kandy is one of the most sacred places for Buddhists all over the world. It has been declared as a world heritage. The Relic of Lord Buddha's left jaw has been securely placed here. Because of this, the devotees can pay homage to it. In history it was believed that the King should be in possession of the Tooth Relic. Therefore, all the Kings tried their best to keep the Tooth Relic in their possession.

In 1770 King Keerthi Sri Rajasingha started the Dalada Perahara. This is a mark of respect and homage to the Tooth Relic. Even today the Perahera is held for eleven days in the month of August every year. All the Kings of Sri Lanka protected it as their own life and held it in utmost reverence.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is also a tourist attraction. Tens of thousands of for tourists never forget to come to Kandy and pay homage to the Sri Dalada Maligawa where the Tooth Relic is placed.

Love the Nature Nature will Love you

Nature is the most precious gift given to us. It is our duty to save and look after it. But, unfortunately man is destroying it for his own selfish purposes by cutting down trees, killing animals and contaminating the atmosphere. Man is also polluting the air with poisonous gases. We are steadily moving towards the path of destruction. Imagine a world, where there will be no forests no flora or fauna. Then, think what would happen to our world.

Now all around the world the environmental pollution is going on unabated. Everyday people cut and pull down trees but they don't plant trees again. As a result we are left with only a desolate land. Dirty environment and bad air tells us this tale. People who know the beauty, benefits and the value of nature must try to protect it.

If we protect nature it will protect us in return. So we must love the nature and we have to pay more attention to look after it.

Writer of The Heart

Charles Dickens, the greatest writer and novelist was born on the 7th of February, 1812 at Portsea, England. He was the second child of six children in a family and was the eldest among the sons. After he was born they had to move because of their money problems.

When Charles was twelve, his father was thrown into a debtors prison. He left school for a while and went to work in a warehouse. At twenty, Dickens began to work as a reporter. He reported law cases and Parliamentary debates. Then he also began writing short stories for magazines.

The best loved and most appreciated Dickens' works are Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and David Copperfield. Charles Dickens died in 1870. He was fifty-eight, at the time of his death. The great Tolstoy once said Dickens was a genius born once in a hundred years.

"No one is useless in the this world, who lightens the burdens of another"

Safety First

Road users frequently fall into difficult situations, because of the careless driving of certain drivers. So road safety is very essential for road users especially for school children, who have to cross roads everyday. Due to careless driving of certain drivers sometimes accidents are taking place. Therefore, it is the duty of everybody to ensure road safety.

Parents should always be careful of their children. Small children, when crossing roads should be very careful. When small students go to school and come back from school parents should ensure their safety.

Traffic police officers are rendering a great service to school children. They always help small children to cross the road. These police officers not only help children, but help even adults to pass the roads. Their service should be appreciated by everybody.

Without road safety you cannot walk along the road. It is a fact that thousands of accidents, are taking place every year. Sometimes the victims get fatal injuries. That is why road safety measures should be further strengthened by the authorities.

It is a great tragedy that no proper action is taken by the government to prevent road accidents which very often take place. Relevant official's attention should be focused much more than today and road safety has to be more meaningfully ensured by them.

Power for Moderns

Electricity is of paramount importance to the modern man. Unlike our ancestors we cannot lead a happy life without electricity. We use electricity for almost every work today. It is used even for agricultural purposes. Therefore, the people find it difficult to live without electricity in the modern world.

We listen to radio and watch television today, not only for entertainment but also to enhance our knowledge on the world. But, if there is no electricity it is impossible for us to watch television or listen to the radio. Electricity is necessary for big or small manufacturing firms which employ thousands of workers. Their factories will have to be closed down making those workers jobless and there would be no products. All these show how important is electricity to the man of the current world.

Electricity is the movements of electrons from one atom to another. It is very versatile and it can produce light energy, heat energy and sound energy. Today we use different kinds of equipment connected with heat, light and sound.

Electricity is a very easy way to get supplies of energy to our houses. Today we use electric bulbs, electric irons, water heaters and many other equipment to get energy.

Those days people used various things to get energy. Oil lamps and candles were two of them. During the period there was no use of electricity, people found it difficult to lead a good life. But today, thanks to the scientists who found electricity and produced various things, we lead a comfortable life.

Sri Lanka's Great Kingdom

Polonnaruwa really is an ancient city. It is over 800 years old. King Parakkramabahu the First built his Royal Palace there in the 12th century. Those days it was several stories high and had a thousand rooms. It is now in ruins. But the walls are still standing in pride.

I had heard of Polonnaruwa and was dreaming to visit this place of historic vallue. One day my dream became a reality as my father took us there during a weekend.

We were able to see the ruins of the Kirivehera and the Rankoth Vehera. In ancient times, the Kiri Vehera had a dome coated with milk-white churn and the Rankoth Vehera had golden spire.

We could also visit the Gal Vihara and see the large statue of the sleeping Buddha. The whole statue was a carving in a rock. One talented sculptor has carved every fold of the Buddha's robe even the mark of his head is there on the stone pillow. The face of the Buddha looks calm and peaceful.

The statue of King Parakkrama Bahu is standing in front of the Pothgul Vehera. This was a library in ancient times. It is the statue of a tall man with a beard. He is holding something in his hands. Some people say that is a statue of King Parakkrama Bahu. Others say that it is a statue of a wise man and that he is holding is an ancient wise ma book.

The Parakkrama Samudraya is the king Parakkarama Bahu's great creation. This is the tank that helped irrigate the fields in ancient Polonnaruwa. king Parakkrama Bahu had said to the people "I Don't want a single drop of rain to flow in to the sea without being of some use to someone" He is a great and wise king. During his reign our country even exported rice to foreign countries.

The Rose of England

The beautiful Diana belonged to an aristocratic family in England. She became Princess Diana after her marriage with Prince Charles who is the heir to the British Throne. Charles and Diana had two sons. The elder William is now the heir to the throne after Prince Charles.

It was later found that Diana had led a miserable life with Prince Charles. So they wanted to part and their marriage ended in a divorce.

Diana started a free life after the divorce. She did social service work too. It was Diana who started a major campaign against landmines. After the campaign was rather successful, many dignitaries gave her the blessing.

Like her married life, Diana's untimely death was also very pathetic. She died in France in a vehicle accident several years ago. Paparazzi or tabloid newspaper reporters carelessness resulted in her death.

Princess Diana was a real beauty. She is fondly remembered by the Britons even today. But there came annoying news about Diana's brother. He is reported to have started to sell tickets to those who come to his garden to pay respect to the place where Princess Diana was buried.

However, despite all rumors about her the world still remembers Diana with love. As Elton Jones says she was the Rose of England.
