The timing is the most important fact of the Sinhala and
Tamil New Year. It considers the New Year celebrations and
customs in whole country according to traditional calendar. It is
public a holiday in Sri Lanka and New Year is generally celebrated on 14th
April and traditionally begins at the Sighting of the new moon
According to Sinhalese astrology, New Year begins when the Sun moves from Meena
Rashiya (the house of Pisces) to Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). The
New Year celebration there for can be thought as a complex mix of Indigenous,
Astrological, Hindu and Buddhists traditions. The month of Bak
which represent prosperity in the Sinhalese calendar
It marks the end of the harvest season and also coincides with one of two
instances when the sun is directly above in Sri Lanka. Very first part of
New Year (down of the new year) is referred as the Nonagathe (the neutral
period of Auspicious Time), During this time Sri Lankans, are according to
traditions, people are encouraged engage solely in either religious
activities.
Cultural rituals begin shortly after the beginning of New Year. All
the families carry rituals in exact timing.
Lighting a fire, making traditional meal, taking foods together, First
doing work at auspicious time (Wada Ellima) are
prominent rituals in the New Year day.
People giving presents and sweet to neighbors and relatives. All are
wearing new clothes at this day. Our traditional meals are Kiribath,
kavum, Kokis, Hathmaluwa, Mun kawum, Aluwa, Undu Walalu, Asmi are many
sweets and Banana fruit is most common fruit in this season.
